Music and Art High School Class of '61--an assemblage of talented, quirky, creative, and highly original teens, now in their sixties, who shaped their identities within the context of the Kennedy Years, the "beat" era, political radicalism, folksong revival, and coffeehouse gatherings.

As both an icon of the past and an example for the future, Music and Art brought about a synthesis that is currently being replicated around the country, in ways that join science and music, and mathematics and art.

    Details, Please!

Founded in 1936,the High School of Music & Art was created by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, to nurture the talents of sudents showing promise in the arts. An admission test consisting of a portfolio (art) and theory and performance (music) was required for entry into what became the 'breeding ground' of graduates such as Cy Coleman, Stanley Drucker, Murray Perahia, Bess Myerson, Tony Roberts, Melissa Manchester, June LeBell, Basil Reeve, and Jimmy Owens--to name a few.

The musical "Fame" celebrated the students of Performing Arts. We propose a more literary, and web-based story of the teachers and students who formed a new generation of teachers and students---and whose impact if felt in concert halls and galleries around the world.

The stories, memorabilia, photographs, art work, musical compositions, occupations and creations of the Class of '61 form a corpus of materials that will inform, delight, and inspire---and, through About.com will reach current students, alumni from 1936 to the present, parents, communities, educational foundations, documentarians, scholars and dramaturges.

    Jennifer Merin, Documentaries Guide, says:

Great idea! VH1, which sponsors the Save The Music programs that bring music into public schools, might be interested. Just a thought. Also, maybe some of those talented alums are now working in film. I suggest you set up a Forum page where people can comment with suggestions or contribute their Music and Art stories that might be of use to the project.
