Documentary Title and Basics:

TWISTED SISTERS

The story of three women and the quest for perfection within the world of female body building.

Premiers on MSNBC on Mother's Day, May 9th.

More About the Documentary's Story And Issues:

Bee Smith drove from her home in Louisiana to Venice Beach, California to live her dream of becoming a pro body builder. Arriving with the naiveté of a country girl, she embarks on a life changing irreversible path of steroid use. Told with honesty and compassion, we follow her as she pushes past boundaries of health and sanity.

I was the executive producer and my wife Marilyn Braverman was the producer, director, and camera person. I watched as she became very close to all of the three main women in the film. A strong bond developed between them as we learned more about their lives than we wanted to know. They spilled their guts, and they knew we were going to tell the whole story.

In the end, they became very nervous as the actual air date approached.

Lessons Learned

  • After nearly four decades of making documentary films, I have finally learned that it is not a good idea to show your subjects the film until it is released.

Jennifer Merin, Documentaries Guide, says:

Isn't it interesting that this documentary about women who go to extremes to perfect their bodies premieres on Mother's Day? I haven't seen the film yet, but it sounds like it delves deeply into women's self-image and self-esteem issues--which are of concern not only on Mother's Day, but every day. I'm interested, too, in the issue of steroid use. I wonder how this film compares to Bogger, Stronger, Faster, a documentary about the use of steroids by male body builders -- and the death of one of the main characters. I wonder whether there's a similarly tragic situation in Twisted Sisters. Eager to know more about the film, and hope viewers who watch will write their impressions.
