Documentary Title and Basics:

Fast Talk

WHEN WORDS LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS

College debaters now speak so fast you can't understand them. Some claim the benefits are clear: more arguments per second that an opposing team needs to rebut. But is there a dark side to fast talk? To answer this question, filmmaker Debra Tolchinsky spent a year following the Northwestern University debate team, which had won more debate tournaments than any other team in the country.

The result? A provocative documentary that will make you question the speed of your own life and keep you talking. Coming January 2011

Lessons Learned

  • It's taken 4.5 years. Just keep at it! A documentary takes a long time.

Jennifer Merin, Documentaries Guide, says:

Interesting topic, and one which has received some attention of late in other films. For example, Resolved follows a high school debate team, and Team Qatar is about the debate team -- which is, surprisingly, co-ed, from that Middle Eastern country. But is sound as though you are looking at the debate team and its process from a different -- and very interesting -- point of view. I suggest setting up a discussion page for Fast Talk at the Documentaries.About.com Forum, where you can further spread the word about the film and build community support for it. Good luck with the project. And, please keep us posted about progress.
