Stranger Than Fiction (STF), New York's premiere documentaries screening series, starts off it's 2010 Fall season with a special pre-season screening of Barbara Kopple's The House of Steinbrenner, about the iconic and controversial grandmaster of the NY Yankees, on Monday, September 20 at the IFC Center in NYC.

The regular season begins on September 28, and the line up is:

  • Sept. 28 - Marwencol (2010) - Directed by Jeff Malmberg and Tod Lippy - Mark Hogancamp, recovering from an attack by thugs, builds a scale model of a fictional WWII town, which he names "Marwencol," that attracts praise from the art world.
  • Oct. 5 - American Splendor (2003) - Directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini - This hybrid of narrative and documentary filmmaking is about the late and great Harvey Pekar, who wrote autobiographical comic books with Robert Crumb and other graphic artists. The film stars Paul Giamatti and Hope Davis.
  • Oct. 12 - On Coal River (2010) - Directed by Francine Cavanaugh and Adams Wood - Following four activists as they fight for the future of their rural West Virginia valley, which is threatened by toxic pollution.
  • Oct. 19 - The Canal Street Madam (2010) - Directed by Cameron Yates -Chronicling the self-directed lifestyle transformation of Jeanette Maier, the infamous madam of a family-run New Orleans brothel that catered to a rich and powerful clientel.
  • Oct. 26 - Taking On The Kennedys - Directed by Joshua Seftel - This political documentary follows Rhode Island Republican Kevin Vigilante as he campaigns against Patrick Kennedy.
  • Nov. 2 - Wo Ai Ni Mommy (I Love You Mommy, 2010 - Directed by Stephanie Wang-Breal - An American family adopts an orphaned eight-year-old Chinese girl who undergoes a surprising transformation.
  • Nov. 9 - War Don Don (2010) - Directed by Rebecca Richman Cohen - Penetrating coverage of the UN tribunal's handling of the war crimes case against Sierra Leone's Issa Sesay, accused of rampant political murder and genocide.
  • Nov. 16 - 12th and Delaware (2010) - Directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady - Takes you to the corner of 12th and Delaware, in Fort Pierce, Florida, where the Pregnancy Care Clinic, a pro-life 'crisis center' has stands across the intersection from A Womans World abortion clinic, and pro-life picketers berate women going to the clinic, trying to seduce them to the Pregnancy Care Clinic's side of the street.
  • Nov. 23 - Marlene (1984) - Directed by Maximilian Schell - The famous actor-turned filmmaker creates this classic biodoc about Marlene Dietrich, using a remarkable interview and rich array of film clips to profile the beloved actress.
  • Nov. 30 (Closing night) - Surviving Hitler: A Love Story (2010) - Directed by John-Keith Wesson - Using rare home movies, interviews and first person narration, this documentary presents remarkable true story of a young Jewish woman and wounded German soldier who fell in love while plotting to kill Hitler and lived, happily, to tell their tale.

Stranger Than Fiction screenings take place on Tuesday nights at 8 pm (unless otherwise noted) at the IFC Center, 323 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10014. Screenings are followed by a Q&A moderated by Stranger Than Fiction founder Thom Powers, with the film's director and (often but not always) its producer and/or principal characters.
