Afghan Star - Movie Review of Afghan Star

Documenting Afghanistan's Version of American Idol

About.com Rating 4

By , About.com Guide

Afghan Star follows three contestants engaged in Afghanistan's most popular contest, the reality TV show that's modeled after American Idol.

International Pop Culture

The similarities and differences between the shows are fascinating -- especially when it comes to the experiences of the woman who's risking her reputation and social standing in order to sing.

The contestants' performances are terrific entertainment. Add to that the fascinating look at the realities of their lives, and what the chance to win this contest means to them, and you've got a very compelling drama. The details shown about their backgrounds is fascinating, and reflect a society rife with civil rivalries and a determination to break out of a repressive system.

Set in the social and political milieu of Afghanistan, this popular television show is opening the door to freedom of expression not possible until recently. It's amazing that a pop culture television show can have such a profound effect on society.
