The six nominees for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking, one of the Emmys' most important nonfiction awards, are The Betrayal, Patti Smith: Dream Of Life, Pressure Cooker, Sergio, Brick City and My Lai.

The documentary with the greatest number of nominations in nonfiction categories is By The People: The Election of Barack Obama, with three nominations: Outstanding Nonfiction Special, Direction and Editing. Directed by Amy Rice and Alicia Sams, and edited by Sam Pollard, Geeta Gandbhir and Arielle Amsalem, the feature length documentary focuses on the 2008 presidential campaign.
