FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival

New England's Largest Film Festival

By , About.com Guide

Founded in 1997, FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival quickly became the largest and most prestigious film festival in New England. Held annually during the month of August, SIIFF presents screenings of narrative features, documentaries and shorts from around the world. Many are premieres. The program always features a large number of very interesting documentaries.

The festival also conducts industry meet-and-greet events, filmmaking workshops and seminars.

The RIIFF is dedicated to the creation of opportunities for "artistic interaction and exchange among independent filmmakers, directors, producers, distributors, backers and the film-going community." In general, it provides a showplace for independent filmmakers whse work explores genres other than those pursued in high budget studio productions with high tech effects and high concept reinterpretations of classic films.

RIIFF's program of films is unique. It is developed from the thousands of submissions the festival organizers receive each year, rather than adopted from programs devised by other festivals. As a result, SIIFF presents a good opportunity to see many films that have not yet been shown widely on the festival circuit.
