This year's awards season draws to a close with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' presentation of Oscars for nonfiction filmmaking in two categories:
- Best Documentary Feature: Searching for Sugar Man - Directed by Malik Bendjalloul, Produced by Simon Chinn
- Best Documentary Short - Inocente - Directed by Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine, Produced by Yael Melamede and Shine Global
Additionally, the Academy presented its Board of Governors Award for the first time to a documentary filmmaker. The honorary Oscar was awarded to D.A. Pennebaker, director of more than 40 documentaries, including the iconic Don't Look Back and, most recently Kings of Pastry, many of which were made with long-term partner Chris Hegedus.
In accepting his honorary Oscar, Pennebaker, whose career spans six decades, said he was particular happy to receive the award because it made him feel that the Academy was acknowledging documentarians as movie directors.
Congrats to the winners and to all of the nominees.
