Yes, it has been confusing!
When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 2013 Oscar for Best Documentary on January 10, four of the five nominated films were listed with 'To Be Determined' in place of the names of their producers.
Oscars for Best Documentary Feature are presented to the producers of the winning film.
As there were no explanations given about the TBDs, one can only assume that there were some pretty heavy credit negotiations going on behind the scenes. Or, the Academy just doesn't track documentaries very well.
Well, whatever staked claims had to be taken into consideration, or whatever research had to be carried out, the results are in. The Academy has finally named the actual nominees for the four films for which there were only TBDs.
They are, in alphabetical order by film title:
- The Gatekeepers - Dror Moreh, Philippa Kowarsky and Estelle Fialon, Producers
- How to Survive a Plague - David France and Howard Gertler, Producers
- The Invisible War - Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, Producers
- Searching for Sugar Man - Malik Bendjelloul and Simon Chinn, Producers
The nominees for the fifth film, 5 Broken Cameras were announced on January 10. They were, and still are, Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi, Producers, who are also credited with having co-directed the film.
The winner of the 2013 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature will be announced at the Academy Awards ceremonies on February 24.
