Talk about a New York subway screening series! This one features documentaries that track civil rights activist artists Dalton Trumbo and Ai Weiwei.
Although American screenwriter Trumbo and Chinese painter/sculptor Ai Weiwei belong to different decades, were born on opposite sides of the globe and practice different professions, both have clearly laid their work and their lives on the line for civil rights. Both have fascinating stories that have been captured in riveting documentaries Both documentaries are screening tonight: Peter Askins' Trumbo is screening downtown at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village, while Alison Klayman's Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry is illuminating the Maysles Theater in Harlem.
You really ought to see both, but scheduling is tight -- even if you take the A Train. If you have to choose one or the other, reading my reviews might help. To do so, click on the highlighted film titles.
