In announcing its award winner for Best Documentary, the National Society of Film Critics also lists the runners up -- with the numbers.
This year, as is usually the case, each of the three nominees had supporters, and they were fairly close, but by no means neck to neck in the race.
Here's this year's tally:
- The Gatekeepers, directed by Dror Moreh - with 53 votes
- This Is Not a Film, directed by Jafar Panahi - with 45 votes
- Searching for Sugar Man, directed by Malik Bendjelloul - with 23 votes
It's interesting to note that in favoring The Gatekeepers over Searching for Sugar Man, the National Society of Film Critics seems to be in a somber mood. Gatekeepers is an intensively investigative piece that reveals much and raises a lot of questions about Israeli counter terrorism policy and practice, while Sugar Man is an entertaining biodoc about the American songster Rodriguez, and has a happy ending.
All three of the films are on the Oscars short list, among the fifteen films under consideration for nomination for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film. The 2013 Oscar nominees are announced on January 10.
Note, too, that the three films are on my Best Documentaries of 2011 list, as well.
