
La-based Film Independent has announced the five nominees for the prestigious Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary. In alphabetical order, they are:
- How to Survive a Plague - David France, director; Howard Gertler, David France, producers (Sundance Selects)
- Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present - Matthew Akers, director; Jeff Dupre, Maro Chermayeff, producers (HBO Documentary Films and Music Box Films)
- The Central Park Five - Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon, directors/producers (IFC Films)
- The Invisible War - Kirby Dick, director; Tanner King Barklow and Amy Ziering, producers (Docurama Films/Cinedigm)
- The Waiting Room - Peter Nicks, director; Peter Nicks, Linda Davis, William B. Hirsch, producers (International Film Circuit)
The award is presented to the director and producer of the winning film at the Spirit Awards ceremony on Saturday, February 23, 2013. The awards ceremony will be held as a daytime luncheon in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, and the premiere broadcast will air later that evening at 10:00 pm ET/PT on IFC.
