The winner of the 2012 Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature is The Interrupters, directed by Steve James and Alex Kotlowitz.
The film follows members of Chicago's CeaseFire, an organization that seeks to 'interrupt' the actions of men, women and children on the verge of violence, and convince them to resolve their differences through discussion and negotiation.
The Interrupters also won top awards at this year's Cinema Eye Honors.
Neither The Interrupters nor any of the other 2012 Spirit Award nominees were among the films nominated for the 2012 Oscar for Best Documentary.
