Film Independent (FIND) has announced the nominees for the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards, including nonfiction films in the following categories:
Best Documentary:
- An African Election - Directed by Jarreth J. Merz and Kevin Merz
- Bill Cunningham New York - Directed by Richard Press
- The Interrupters - Directed by Steve James
- We Were Here - Directed by David Weissman and Bill Weber
- The Redemption of General Butt Naked - Directed by Daniele Anastasion and Eric Strauss
The Documentary Feature Nominating Committee included Ted Mundorff (CEO Landmark Theatres, committee chairperson), Lesley Chilcott (producer), Juan Devis (KCET), Laura Gabbert (director), Nelson George (author/filmmaker), John Maringouin (filmmaker), Rachel Rosen (San Francisco Film Society's Director of Programming) and Kenneth Turan (film critic, Los Angeles Times and NPR's "Morning Edition.")
Truer Than Fiction Award:
- Where Soldiers Come From - Directed by Heather Courtney
- Hell and Back Again- Directed by Darfung Dennis
- Bombay Beach - Directed by Alma Ha'rel
The Truer Than Fiction Award Nominating Committee included Wesley Morris (film critic, committee chairperson), Ava DuVernay (filmmaker), Laura Poitras (filmmaker), PJ Raval (filmmaker/cinematographer) and Laura Thielen (programmer).
The 27th FIND Spirit Awards will be presented on February 25, 2012, in Santa Monica, California, and will be broadcast on the IFC channel.
