While honoring soldiers who've fought America's battles from the Civil War to Iraq's Operation Freedom, Wartorn also reveals -- often quite poignantly -- that those who return from combat without physical injuries suffer psychological and spiritual wounds that may never heal. Their symptoms -- nightmares, sleeplessness, outbreaks of violence, severe depression, ongoing fear and paranoia, among others -- are collectively known as PTSD. In the extreme, the condition can lead to suicide, and authorities say incidents of suicide among recent veterans are increasing.
PTSD is apparently incurable, and the ongoing symptoms effect not only the combat veterans themselves, but their nearest and dearest family and friends, as well -- and their next door neighbors, people in their workplaces and society as a whole.
Wartorn is emotionally draining, but it provides insight into what veterans are going through and how that effects everyone -- on Veterans Day and everyday.
