In honor of the brilliant singer and actress Lena Horne, who died on Sunday, May 9, 2010, at the age of 92, WNET's American Masters offers a special presentation of the 1996 program Lena Horne: In Her Own Voice.
Directed by Susan Lacy, the hour long biodoc chronicles the story of Lena Horne's difficult journey to stardom, and includes exclusive interviews with Ms. Horne and her daughter, as well as with Ossie Davis, Alan King, Liz Smith and others who worked with the performer. Clips from Ms. Horne's best known movies -- Stormy Weather and her MGM films of the 1940s -- and snippits from her TV appearances are used to illustrate Ms. Horne's life story and the path of her career.
Lena Horne: In Her Own Voice is scheduled to air on PBS from May 14 through May 23, 2010 (check your local listings for broadcast times). In New York, the film will air on Channel Thirteen on Sunday, May 16 at 10:30 p.m. and again on Friday, May 21 at 9:30 p.m. The film will also be streaming beginning Friday, May 14 through Sunday, May 23.
