Thank you, HBO, for not scheduling your premiere of Afghan Star against any of the American Idol broadcasts...because Idol fans -- and everyone else who's interested in pop culture and its impact -- should be watching Havana Marking's award-winning documentary that follows several talented young Afghani singers as they compete for their country's version of the American dream.
Afghan Star is one of those extremely entertaining and enlightening documentaries that has very broad audience appeal.
Idol fans: You'll likely find yourself rooting for one of the 'stars,' just as you do for Casey or Crystal....
Documentary lovers: You'll find that the film, set in the social and political milieu of Afghanistan, shows how a popular television show is opening the door to freedom of expression not possible until recently.
Afghan Star airs on HBO on March 18 at 9 pm EST, with additional air dates to follow. Meanwhile, watch the trailer and read my review.
