Scientific research is gaining momentum in discovering ways to treat and possibly prevent Alzheimer's. HBO's comprehensive four-part documentary series, The Alzheimer's Project, delivers new understanding about the disease and the latest information about potential treatments to all who fear onset of Alzheimer's and to those whose loved ones are already afflicted with it.
The series features 15 short supplemental films, all of which are available on HBO.com, and a companion book, The Alzheimer's Project Book, which further explores the cutting-edge research on Alzheimer's disease and investigates the complex cascade of events that occurs inside the brain when someone has Alzheimer's disease.
Maria Shriver, who co-produced The Alzheimer's Project with HBO's Sheila Nevins, appears in one of the series' four segments, sharing her personal experiences with the disease as it effected her highly accomplished activist father, Sargent Shriver, and her entire family.
Additionally, HBO reaches out to the Alheimer's community, offering a My Space forum for people to share their personal stories and create tributes to their afflicted loved ones.
The Alzheimer's Project premieres on May 10, 2009 at 10 PM on HBO.
