Because the film exposes specifics politicians, scandal-mongers and the religious right wing may buzz this film as an outing rampage. But they're missing the point: the documentary is about the hypocrisy of our elected politicians who determine how we live our lives. Outrage is a film that focuses on civil rights for gays, but it's about the civil rights of all and the core values of our American democracy--actually, and perhaps ironically or tragically, including the rights of those who're closeting themselves on our nation's capital hills in order to float their political careers.
In chronicling the outing Jim McGreevy, for example, Outrage reveals the former New Jersey governor's painful struggle with conscience and lifestyle before he publicly identified himself as gay. McGreevy's story is truthful and powerful. In contrast, the current Florida governor, the conservative Republican Charlie Christ, is shown to consistently dodge the issue of sexuality--by serial marriages and coy remarks made in response to questions raised about his being gay. And there are others. But, although Republicans seem to have the highest degree of hypocrisy regarding gayness and gay rights, it's not only GOP members who are exposed in the film. The hidden sexual behavior of New York's former mayor, Ed Koch, famous as an advocate for many liberal causes, is identified in Outrage.
Note that Outrage is well researched and non-scandalous in its approach. Instead of muckraking, it calls for a serious public debate about civil rights of the gay community and, by extension, of all Americans. It's an important film, one that should be seen--and not only by the gay community who are already so aware of these issues. In fact, as a double bill with the recent and very popular biopic, Milk, it is a film that can bring this pressing issue to the general public in a very human, understandable and convincing way.
Outrage, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 24, opens in theaters in select cities on on May 5, and rolls out nationwide in subsequent weeks. Put it on your must see list.

This is obviously a decoy for a homophobic hate-group.
This cannot be real.
How is targeting GAYS (republican or otherwise) for ridicule and exposure NOT HOMOPHOBIA?
Why aren’t the sexual habits of STRAIGHT republicans of equal interest to this group?
Like other homophobes, these homophobes target the weak that have already been marginalized, oppressed or otherwise made to feel inferior in that they are still ‘in the closet.’ Why prey on those whose self esteem is so low they would actually vote against their own interest? Because that’s what bigots do. Too dumb to defend their own hate, they pick a weak target.
Why don’t they go after people who aren’t the victims of the very OPPRESSION they are preaching against? Those people are ALL STRAIGHT. ALL of them. When oppression targets gay people as a whole, ALL gay people become victims to that oppression and their reaction can sometimes lead to serious self-image issues that may explain their secretive lifestyles and their self-destructive support of anti-gay policy. Outing them means confronting them with their worst fear–exposure. This fear was CREATED UNIQUELY BY STRAIGHT PEOPLE belonging to a variety of political parties and religions.
So, why blame (republican) GAYS for the consequences of the actions of other STRAIGHT people before them? Why challenge (republican) GAYS on their thinking but not those STRAIGHT people who seek to make gays THINK they are indeed inferior and unwanted?
Clearly, this is an ANTI-GAY witch hunt. Because this is either a complete hoax and they are trying to recruit members for their ANTI-GAY HATE CLUB; or this has to be THE DUMBEST effort to bring awareness to LBGT rights EVER.
Thanks for your comments, and for taking the time to make them. I assure you that Kirby Dick and the other people involved in making and distributing Outrage are champions of civil rights for gays, and for everyone else. I would suggest that you actually see the film they’ve made before criticising their intentions.
This movie had an agenda to make conservatives who are struggling with their identity have to answer to gay activist. It would be one thing if they crossed both sides of the isle in “outing” peopl ( which I believe is morally wrong).
There are 535 members of Congress and Frank is the ONLY person who is serving as an openly gay man. Frank did not run as an openly gay man he was outed when he and his boyfriend got caught running a prostitution ring out of there town house.
Let’s look at the Democrate House which has 257 members minus Frank. NOT ONE is serving as an openly gay person. The Democratic Party is welcoming wagon for gays — right. So why is there not 1 openly gay person in the Senate of which they hold 60 seats.
There are as many people in the Democratic Party hiding there sexual identiry as there is in the Republican Party given the nature of human beings. Be a homosexual is a bi-partisan issue.
You said it was well research and as far as Charlie Crist is concerned I found that not too be true. I did my own research on the net and not one person has come forward to say they had a relationship with him. I think what the gay activist are trying to do to Crist is distugusting.
I it NO PERSON’s job to out someone who is not ready or wanting to come out. That is the most personal decision any gay person can make.
