The English Surgeon, winner of jury prizes at Hot Docs and Silverdocs and nominated for two Cinema Eye Awards, opens Stranger Than Fiction's 2009 Spring Season at New York's IFC Center.

Director Geoffrey Smith follows the brilliant British brain surgeon Dr. Henry Marsh as he struggles to save patients in underequipped, understaffed hospital environments of the Ukraine, where locals look upon him as a savior, but he faces his own medical uncertainties and human frailties.

"When push comes to shove we can afford to lose an arm or a leg," says Dr. Marsh. "But I am operating on people's thoughts and feelings...and if something goes wrong I can destroy that person's character...forever." Yet, he proceeds. "My son had a brain tumor as a baby and I was desperate for someone to help me. I simply can't walk away from that need in others."

This remarkable study of how one man is fighting to make a difference is a good lesson for all of us. The STF screening is at 8 PM EST. Geoffrey Smith and Dr. Henry Marsh will be on hand for a post-screening Q&A. Meanwhile, view the trailer.
