John and Brad Hennegan's wonderful Kentucky Derby documentary, The First Saturday in May, has won awards at festivals across the nation and begins its theatrical release in New York on April 13, then rolls into other cities.
The film follows six throroughbred trainers as they prepare for the 2006 race--the last race that the great Barbaro completed. Amazing close ups and personal coverage of Barbaro and trainer Michael Matz are highlights.
Additionally, you get a behind-the-scenes primer about the fascinating world of world-class horseracing. The horses are magnificent, and the trainers and their cohorts are coloful and entertaining characters.
This engaging film will come to DVD, but see it in a theater if you can--it's well worth the price of admission. Read my review.

Where on earth is this film playing in New York? I would like to see it tonight with my wife, but were having a terrible time finding theatres and showtimes on the web
