The Cool School (2007): A Hot Doc About LA's Art Scene

Wednesday March 26, 2008
Releasing in limited theatrical run, The Cool School takes us into the wildly unconventional lifestyle of the artists who created LA's revolutionary art scene during the 1950s.

Ed Rauscha, Ed Keinholz, Ed Moses and the other avant garde artists who first showed their work at Walter Hobbs' Ferus Gallery were a tight knit clique who went on to worldwide fame.

Director Morgan Neville tells their story by weaving a tight knit narrative from fascinating archival footage and recent on camera interviews, including a moving appearance by Hobbs--filmed just 12 days before his death.

This film offers a terrific overview of how fine art took hold in Tinsel Town and how, on the other hand, Tinsel Town influenced the art that was produced there.

If you love art, you'll love this film. If it isn't in theaters in your town, look for it on DVD in upcoming months. Meanwhile, read my review.
