In Arctic Tale, opening theatrically this week, directors Adam Ravetch and Sarah Robertson bring out the human-like qualities of Nanu, a polar bear cub, and Seela, the walrus pup, in order to bring home their message about the harsh effects of global warming.
Anthropomorphism is infrequent in documentary films, but by putting a human (or animal) face on global warming, Arctic Tale picks up where An Inconvenient Truth leaves off. Establishing those creature connections really tugs at our heart strings, especially when we see young Nanu floating on a patch of melting ice.
Arctic Tale is one documentary where anthropomorphism--which would be taboo among nonfiction film purists--really seems appropriate. Read my full review.
